How Bats Keep Out Echo Clutter (4 of 7) (IMAGE)
Caption
This diagram shows how the researchers did experiments that combine the bat flying in a dense obstacle environment while carrying the radiomicrophone to pick up the broadcasts. The radiomicrophone ("Telemike") work was done in collaboration with Hiroshi Riquimaroux and Shizuko Hiryu, at Doshisha University, in Kyoto, Japan. This image relates to an article that appeared in the July 29, 2011, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Mary E. Bates of Brown University in Providence, R.I., and colleagues was titled, "Bats Use Echo Harmonic Structure to Distinguish Their Targets from Background Clutter."
