Shanshan Continues Its Northward Trek (IMAGE) NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Caption Typhoon Shanshan is located approximately 261 nautical miles southeast of Yokosuka, Japan, and is tracking northwestward at 10 knots over the past six hours. The weakening trend that was seen yesterday continues with a partial erosion of the typhoon's eyewall on the west quadrant. Current intensity estimates of the storm have it decreasing and now range in the 88 to 103 mph (77 knots to 90 knots). Typhoon Shanshan will continue to trek northwestward on its journey and then will begin a more northward track. In the next day and a half Typhoon Shanshan is expected to gradually weaken as the system interacts with land. After that occurrence, rapid weakening will commence due to vertical wind shear and unfavorable sea surface temperature, and in the next two days, the storm will accelerate northeastward and then quickly transition into an extra-tropical cyclone by day three.
