On Choosing an LCROSS Impact Site (3 of 3) (IMAGE)
Caption
This is a Lunar Exploration Neutron Detector (LEND)-derived map of the epithermal neutron flux within Cabeus crater (primary cavity). Colors represent the level of epithermal neutron suppression. The colored stars represent the locations of the LCROSS impact sites (green and yellow correspond to the Shepherding Spacecraft and the Centaur upper stage, respectively). The insert (upper right) represents the map of subsurface temperatures within Cabeus from the LRO Diviner instrument. Please see figure 1 in the manuscript for more information. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Oct. 22, 2010, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Igor Mitrofanov of the Institute for Space Research of the Russian Academy of Science in Moscow, Russia, and colleagues is titled, "Hydrogen Mapping of the Lunar South Pole Using the LRO Neutron Detector Experiment LEND."
