Small Fires Dot the Kansas Landscape (IMAGE) NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Caption Nine fires in Kansas have been reported through the National Interagency Coordination Center on April 08, 2016. The Incident Management Situation Report provides information on fires that range in size from 320 acres to the Tampa Fire which is 3200 acres. All the fires reported are all reported as contained at present. Most of these fires are small brush fires that are being taken care of by local crews. Less than 100 personnel are fighting these various fires. Some fires that appear on this satellite image may also be agricultural in nature meaning farmers have deliberately set them to clear unwanted leftover plants, or they could be prescribed fires which are set to manage land to prevent larger fires from spreading. NASA's Suomi NPP satellite collected this natural-color image using the VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) instrument on April 12, 2016. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS's thermal bands, are outlined in red. Credit NASA image courtesy Jeff Schmaltz LANCE/EOSDIS MODIS Rapid Response Team, GSFC.
