MSU Professor Alexandra Gade collaborated with international colleagues for a Review of Modern Physics article about shell evolution of exotic nuclei. The graphic displays the chart of nuclei, or proton vs. neutron number, and indicates the magic numbers that were shown to change for short-lived nuclei at the fringes of the chart. To understand the production of the elements in the Universe, the properties, including shell structure, of such nuclei have to be understood.
