The clay pit, located between the exposed roots of two adjacent trees, consists of two cavities. Scientists observed chimpanzees at the pit to see if they used moss to soak up the mineral-rich water. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the April 26, 2017, issue of Science Advances, published by AAAS. The paper, by N. Lamon at University of Neuchâtel in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, and colleagues was titled, "Kin-based cultural transmission of tool use in wild chimpanzees."
