Rochester Biologist Creates Artificial Nacre Using Bacteria (VIDEO)
Caption
University of Rochester biologist Anne S. Meyer and her colleagues used bacteria to replicate the layered structure of nacre to produce a synthetic material with the strength and flexibility of natural mother-of-pearl. The method used to create the novel material could lead to new applications in medicine, engineering -- and even constructing buildings on the moon.
