The GPM core satellite passed over the depression as it was forming on Aug. 16 at 4:31 p.m. EDT and found rainfall south of the center was falling at a rate of over 155 mm (6.1 inches) per hour and some tall storms reached heights of over 15 km (9.3 miles).
