A section of brain from an individual who had Alzheimer's Disease during their lifetime. Claudin-5 is a protein expressed (in red) in blood vessels of the brain. Stained in green is an amyloid plaque and it is evident that where there is amyloid deposited there is limited claudin-5. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the September 18, 2015, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by J. Keaney at Trinity College Dublin in Dublin, Ireland, and colleagues was titled, 'Autoregulated paracellular clearance of amyloid-ß across the blood-brain barrier.'
