Tortoiseshell is processed from the carapace shell of the hawksbill sea turtle, pictured here at a necropsy in Hawaii. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the March 27th, 2019, issue of Science Advances, published by AAAS. The paper, by E.A. Miller at Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, CA, and colleagues was titled, "The historical development of complex global trafficking networks for marine wildlife."
