In a recent survey of published animal studies, Randy Nelson -- chair of the WVU Department of Neuroscience and director of basic science research for the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute -- and his colleagues found that time of day was often not taken into account. Disregarding the animals' circadian rhythms can hamper the reproducibility, reliability and validity of studies.
