This is the lateral view of the rat brain showing how the lateral habenula (red) influence the other brain regions such as the hippocampus (green) by way of the modulation of serotonergic activity (blue). Serotonergic neurons connect with many brain regions including the hippocampus. Activation of the lateral habenula inhibits the serotonergic neurons in the raphe nucleus (blue) through activation of the inhibitory interneurons (light blue).
