Over 2 meters tall and 250 kilograms in weight, the elephant bird Aepyornis maximus wanders through the spiny forest of ancient Madagascar. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the May 23, 2014, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Kieren J. Mitchell at University of Adelaide in North Terrace, SA, Australia, and colleagues was titled, "Ancient DNA reveals elephant birds and kiwi are sister taxa and clarifies ratite bird evolution."
