Rapid eruption of the Columbia River flood basalt and correlation with the mid-Miocene climate optimum (5 of 6) (IMAGE)
Caption
The red layer found between two basalt flows on top of Steens Mountain (Oregon) yielded zircons that were dated to constrain the age of the oldest formation of the Columbia River Basalt Group, for which Kasbohm & Schoene present a new eruptive timeline. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Sep. 19, 2018, issue of Science Advances, published by AAAS. The paper, by Jennifer Kasbohm at Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, and colleagues was titled, "Rapid eruption of the Columbia River flood basalt and correlation with the mid-Miocene climate optimum."
