Caption
This shows "Course fraction" of deep ocean sediment revealing microscopic marine calcarous microfossils called foraminifera. The chemical and isotopic compositions are used to chart changes in ocean composition through time. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the Aug. 10, 2012, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Henry Elderfield at the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, UK, and colleagues was titled, “Evolution of Ocean Temperature and Ice Volume Through the Mid-Pleistocene Climate Transition.”
