Plasmodium parasites have to cross the mosquito midgut epithelium to complete their development. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the Jan. 26, 2012, issue of Science Express, published by AAAS. The paper, by G.d.A. Oliveira at National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, NIH in Rockville, Md., and colleagues, was titled, “Epithelial Nitration by a Peroxidase/NOX5 System Mediates Mosquito Antiplasmodial Immunity.”
