Therapeutic Targets in Mitochondrial Diseases (1 of 1) (IMAGE)
Caption
Key players--and therapeutic targets--in mitochondrial protein modification, calcium (Ca2+) transport, and dynamics. Mitochondrial protein can be modified by the thioester-coenzyme A (CoA) produced by substrate metabolism. Ca2+ is also a key player in orchestrating metabolism and signaling function of the mitochondria. Finally, the mitochondrial dynamic regulatory proteins may bear new roles beyond fusion and fission. The black arrows indicate potential targets for drug development. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Feb. 17, 2016, issue of Science Translational Medicine, published by AAAS. The paper, by R. Tian at University of Washington in Seattle, WA, and colleagues was titled, "Novel targets for mitochondrial medicine."
