Origami-Based Impact Mitigation via Rarefaction Solitary Wave Creation (3 of 6) (IMAGE)
Caption
Inspired by the paper folding art of origami, a University of Washington team created a paper model of a metamaterial that uses 'folding creases' to soften impact forces for potential applications in spacecraft, cars and beyond. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the May 24th, 2019, issue of Science Advances, published by AAAS. The paper, by H. Yasuda at University of Washington, Seattle, WA, and colleagues was titled, 'Origami-based impact mitigation via rarefaction solitary wave creation.'
