Typhoon Wukong's Eye Winks Out As It Winds Down (IMAGE)
Caption
As Typhoon Wukong weakened overnight, its eye closed shut. The storm is located approximately 580 nautical miles east of Misawa, Japan and north of the Tropical Storm Jongdari.
Imagery shows that the storm remains a symmetric system but there is limited deep convection associated with the low level circulation center. As Wukong churns north-northeastward strong vertical wind shear has begun to weaken the storm. The current intensity of the storm is around 50 knots. Upper level outflow is limited and confined to the southwest quadrant of the storm. The combination of unfavorable sea surface temperatures and vertical wind shear will continue to weaken the storm as it travels farther north. Wukong will continue in this way until it hits very unfavorable sea surface temperatures which will result in the storm becoming extra-tropical and then dissipate within the next two days.
NOAA/NASA's Suomi NPP satellite captured this visible look of Typhoon Wukong as it traveled through the Northwest Pacific Ocean on July 26, 2018.
