Novel Roles of the Love Hormone 'oxytocin' in Controlling Male Sexual Activity (IMAGE)
Caption
Oxytocin directly activates the spinal ejaculation generator (SEG)/gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) neurons via oxytocin receptors (OXTRs) and influences male sexual function in the rat lumbar spinal cord. Release of oxytocin in the lumbar cord is not limited to conventional synapses and acts by diffusion--a localized volume transmission--to reach OXTRs on SEG/GRP neurons and facilitate male sexual activity.
