Caption
Paleontologist hunts for 7 million year old fossils on Finger Island along the Caribbean coast of Panama. Fossils found in this rock share more affinities with Pacific faunas, providing further evidence that the Isthmus of Panama had yet formed at this time. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Aug. 17, 2016, issue of Science Advances, published by AAAS. The paper, by A. O'Dea at Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Balboa, Panama, and colleagues was titled, 'Formation of the Isthmus of Panama.'
