This is a drawing of the extinct Australian giant short-faced kangaroo Simosthenurus occidentalis, part of the Sthenurinae sub-family. mtDNA from the petrous bones of Simosthenurus occidentalis has linked extinct Sthenurinae with Australia's living banded hare-wallaby.
