Lava Pillars (IMAGE)

Lava pillars (about 2.5 meters high) in the lava flow that erupted in 1998 at Axial volcano. The authors discovered the new microbe in hydrothermal fluids sampled near the volcano. This image relates to article that appeared in the Dec. 15, 2006, issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Mausmi P. Mehta of University of Washington in Seattle, Wash., and colleagues, was titled "Nitrogen Fixation at 92 degrees Celcius by a Hydrothermal Vent Archaeon."
