Child with runny nose at clinic. New evidence indicates that colds and respiratory infections can lead to anemia. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the March 27th, 2019, issue of Science Advances, published by AAAS. The paper, by A.M. Prentice at MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM in Fajara, Gambia, and colleagues was titled, "Respiratory infections drive hepcidin-mediated blockade of iron absorption leading to iron deficiency anemia in African children."
