This is a research site near Rifle, Colo., where the Department of Energy is funding long-term subsurface research on contaminant mobility. The site's history as a milling facility for ores rich in uranium and other metals (such as vanadium, selenium, and arsenic) has resulted in low but persistent levels of contamination within subsurface sediments and groundwater. One of the projects selected as part of the DOE Joint Genome Institute's 2016 Community Science Program (CSP) portfolio is led by Christopher Francis at Stanford University. nitrogen-cycling microbial communities at uranium-contaminated groundwater sites within the upper Colorado River Basin.
