Fires in California and Nevada (IMAGE)

Sparked by lightning, the Holloway Fire had burned 112 square miles near the Nevada-Oregon border by Aug. 8, 2012. The fire is burning in grass and scrubland, close the same area that burned in July in the Long Draw Fire. The Holloway Fire is only five percent contained. The Chips Fire in not fairing much better than Holloway at this point. The fire is only 16% contained. Winds, dry weather, and extreme terrain are all contributing to the difficulties in fighting this fire. The Willow Fire just southeast of Holloway was also started by lightning, but is mostly contained at this point according to inciweb.org Salt Creek Fire in California is also contained at this point and the main duty of firefighters and equipment are to mop up, strengthen and secure fire lines. A Burned Area Emergency Response team has begun initial assessments into area disturbance and plans for rehabilitation.
