Dance is a form of culturally based cooperation. It is a system of shared self-expression and meaning in which individuals gain personal and social benefits through participation while excluding (i.e., punishing) those who would disrupt the coordination or enaction of the performance. The experience of the performers and any audience present acts deep emotional levels through established cultural symbols and their associated feelings.
