To test their suspicion that native species rely on early successional habit the scientists sampled plants in early, middle and late successional habitat. In this photo the bare sand and sparse vegetation to the left side constitute early successional habitat. The native dune grasses, perennial plants and shrubs to the right are characteristic of late successional habitat.
