Photograph of two juvenile black-footed ferrets periscoping from a white-tailed prairie dog burrow in Shirley Basin, Wyo. Juveniles are almost fully grown by the time biologist initiate their spotlight surveys in mid-August. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Aug. 10, 2007, issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Martin B. Grenier and colleagues of the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyo., was titled "Rapid Population Growth of a Critically Endangered Carnivore."
