Leaf Quality Drives Forests' Ability to Absorb Carbon (1 of 1) (VIDEO)
Caption
Seasonal leaf renewal as seen from the Large Scale Biosphere Atmosphere (LBA) tower near Manaus, Brazil, over the course of 12 months (2011-2012). Upper canopy tree crowns flush new leaves mostly in the dry season, leading to seasonal changes in the age of leaves and in photosynthetic efficiency of the forest. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Feb. 26, 2016, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by J. Wu at University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ, and colleagues was titled, 'Leaf development and demography explain photosynthetic seasonality in Amazon evergreen forests.'
