The engineered tattoo cells produce melanin and darken when exposed to elevated calcium levels. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the 18 April, issue of Science Translational Medicine, published by AAAS. The paper, by A. Tastanova at ETH Zurich in Basel, Switzerland, and colleagues was titled, " Synthetic biology-based cellular biomedical tattoo for detection of hypercalcemia associated with cancer."
