Don't Eat Me: Synthetic Peptides Trick Immune System (1 of 1) (VIDEO)
Caption
The University of Pennsylvania's Dennis Discher explains how his research team designed a "passport" to put on nanoparticles, which can fool the immune system into thinking they are part of the body. Without this passport protein, such nanoparticles are cleared by macrophages before they can deliver drugs or help image tumors. This video relates to a paper that appeared in the Feb. 22, 2013, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Pia L. Rodriguez at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA, and colleagues was titled, “Minimal "Self" Peptides That Inhibit Phagocytic Clearance and Enhance Delivery of Nanoparticles.”
