Photograph of a simulation of a Type Ia supernova explosion in the delayed detonation scenario. After the thermonuclear deflagration flame (purple surface) has burned the inner part of the exploding White Dwarf star, a detonation ignites (blue surface). This image relates to article that appeared in the Feb. 9, 2007, issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Paolo Mazzali and colleagues of Max-Planck Institut fur Astrophysik in Garching, Germany, was titled "A Common Explosion Mechanism for Type Ia Supernovae."
