University of Utah anthropologist Brian Codding has published a new study showing that Native Americans migrating to California in the past 12,000 years settled in the most lush coastal environments first, then in successively less productive inland environments and finally in the deserts of the Great Basin. The findings explain why prehistoric California was a patchwork of numerous diverse Native American ethnic groups and languages.
