1812 maps of the Massachusetts and Maine coasts superimposed on an outline of the Northeast US coast. These maps show the extent of fish inspectors' reports coverage in the Gulf of Maine. Map A follows the common navigational trope of putting west at the top of the map, the direction sailed approaching Boston from Europe. Map B shows Maine's frontier character, fringe settlements along waterways and an interior that was largely unknown. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Jan. 18, 2017, issue of Science Advances, published by AAAS. The paper, by K.E. Alexander at University of Massachusetts Amherst in Amherst, Mass., and colleagues was titled, 'Tambora and the mackerel year: Phenology and fisheries during an extreme climate event.'
