The massive craters were formed around 12,000 years ago, but are still seeping methane and other gases. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the June 2, 2017, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by K. Andreassen at Centre for Arctic Gas Hydrate, Environment and Climate (CAGE), The Arctic University of Norway (UiT) in Tromsø, Norway, and colleagues was titled, 'Massive blow-out craters formed by hydrate-controlled methane expulsion from the Arctic seafloor.'
