Prox1 Gene Induces Cancerous Growth in Colon Carcinomas (IMAGE)
Caption
Development of colorectal carcinomas takes a long time. First, a benign adenoma develops inside of the gut tube. This grows often to a cauliflower-like pattern (phases 1-2). Subsequently, genes such as Prox1 come into play and induce a cancerous type of growth consisting of disorganized cells and loss of tissue architecture (phase 4). The study indicates that by inhibiting the action of Prox1, one can arrest the development of the tumor in the benign phase of growth (phase 3, Stop sign). Artwork by Tarja Pitkänen (Amasertek).
