Electron Density in Aluminum (2 of 3) (IMAGE)
Caption
Two unit cells of aluminum, the top one showing a [110] plane section of the bonding electron density as a contour plot, and the lower cell showing that pockets of positive bonding density are localized in the tetrahedral holes. This image relates to an article that appeared in the March 25, 2011, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Philip Nakashima, at Monash University in Clayton, VIC, Australia, and colleagues was titled, "The Bonding Electron Density in Aluminum."
