Mechanism of Strength Reduction Along the Graphenization Pathway (IMAGE)
Caption
A snapshot of a highly disordered polycrystalline graphene model at 11.1 percent uniaxial strain. Several reversible nonpropagating nanocracks, displayed with red arrows, protect the system from catastrophic failure. Chemical bonds are colorcoded according to their elongation from blue (< 0.15 nm) to red (> 0.175 nm). This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Nov. 20, 2015, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by A. Gamboa at Université de Bordeaux in Pessac, France, and colleagues was titled, 'Mechanism of strength reduction along the graphenization pathway.'
