The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research has set aside 1.5 million euros over the next three years to fund a project run by Professor Marius Grundmann's research group at Leipzig University's Felix Bloch Institute for Solid State Physics. The goal is to develop a spectrometer so small that it can fit into smartphones and similar items. By 2023 the team hope to perfect a ready-to-use prototype, which is already largely complete in theory.
