Low levels of DNA methylation (hypomethylated state) at promoter regions allow the binding of transcription factors (TFs), which leads to gene activation and subsequently protein production. Elevated DNA methylation (hypermethylation) at promoter regions inhibits the binding of transcription factors (TFs) resulting in decreased gene activation and therefore reduced protein production
