Dermo Shift (IMAGE)
Caption
Panel A shows the original form of the Dermo parasite Perkinsus marinus, with black arrows indicating typical Dermo cells and the white arrow a dividing form, all infecting connective tissues deep inside an oyster. Panel B shows the new form of the parasite, much smaller, with the arrow indicating a mass of dozens of Dermo cells inside a single oyster blood cell, and primarily infecting the lining of the stomach and gut.
