Long-term Prognosis in Patients with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus after Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (IMAGE)

In a study publishing today in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, researchers investigated long-term survival in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes following coronary artery bypass grafting. Patients with type 1 diabetes had more than double the long-term risk of death after the surgery compared with patients without diabetes. The long-term risk of death in patients with type 2 diabetes was only slightly higher than in patients with no diabetes. Patients with type 1 diabetes were more likely than patients with type 2 or without diabetes to have comorbidities such as chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease, peripheral vascular disease or heart failure, which are all associated with a worse prognosis in coronary bypass patients with diabetes.
