Earth's Core May be Rich in Sulfur, Silicon, Hydrogen (IMAGE)

A schematic illustration of the Earth's inner core, which is the deepest region in the Earth. Researchers have found evidence that in addition to iron and hydrogen, sulfur and silicon may be a part of Earth' core materials. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Feb. 26, 2016, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by T. Sakamaki at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan, and colleagues was titled, "Constraints on Earth's inner core composition inferred from measurements of the sound velocity of hcp-iron in extreme conditions."
