The image represents the 3-D structure of the metal-organic framework used in this study: a nanoporous thin film that consists of both organic molecules and metal ions. The nanopores are represented as yellow balls. The internal surface of an MOF, formed by all these pores, varies in size from 1,000 to 5,000 m2 per gram of material.
