T cells/DC in resting skin. The ‘stress-molecule’ Rae-1 is expressed in mouse models of skin tumors, where it can be recognized by resident T cells. Expression of Rae-1 causes activation of these T cells, which in turn can activate other cells and rapidly induce production of IgE. The skin tumors, which are here caused by exposure to carcinogenic chemicals, show abundant IgE antibodies. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the Dec. 2, 2011, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by J. Strid at King’s College School of Medicine at Guy's Hospital in London, UK, and colleagues, was titled, “The Intraepithelial T Cell Response to NKG2D-Ligands Links Lymphoid Stress Surveillance to Atopy.”
