The Rise of the Andes Mountains (IMAGE)
Caption
Sedimentary rocks of the Salla Formation, Eastern Cordiller, Bolivia. These rocks were deposited between approximately 29 and 25 million years ago. Paleoelevation constraints from these rocks suggest that they were deposited at less than 500 meters, whereas now, they sit at approximately 3600 meter elevations. This image relates to an article that appeared in the June 6, 2008, issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Carmala Garzione and colleagues at University of Rochester in Rochester, NY, was titled "Rise of the Andes."
