Bats could be more flexible in their echolocation behavior than previously thought, according to a new study into the foraging techniques of this species -- the desert long-eared bat (Otonycteris hemprichii) by researchers at the University of Bristol. The research, published in the Journal of Experimental Biology found that the bats could switch foraging mode from "gleaning" to "hawking" and altered the volume of their calls accordingly.
