Healthy versus myasthenia gravis (IMAGE)
Caption
In healthy people, binding of the molecule acetylcholine (ACh) to its receptor (AChR) on skeletal muscle cells triggers muscle contraction underlying regular daily activities. In the autoimmune disease myasthenia gravis, self-directed autoantibodies bind to the AChR, causing muscle weakness through several ways.
