How Bacteria Disperse (IMAGE)
Caption
Bacteria that rarely tumble are likely to get trapped by obstacles, slowing dispersion. Bacteria that tumble frequently often “retrace their steps,” also slowing dispersion. Dispersion is maximized by balancing tumble frequency with the need to avoid becoming trapped.
